We just booked our accomodation you guys!!!! You can't imagine how excited we are right now

We staying at the Hotel Matinlahti, not too far out of centre of Helsinki right near the beach. It looks really nice.
If any you of guys know anything about the place....I'd love it if you could let me know, like how's the public transport out that way? How much you reckon a taxi fare would be from Hartwall back to Hotel that sort of thing.....
OMG I can't wait

Well, I live in Matinkylä, Espoo.
Espoo is the neighboring city of Helsinki and there is about 14km to the centre of Helsinki. It's possible to travel by bus to Helsinki and then take a train from there to Hartwall arena. I think taxi costs some 20 euro? Someone else knows probably better.
Short description of how you can get to Hartwall Arena:
From the hotel you must take a bus to Iso Omena -mall (where you can do your smaller shoppings). It can be seen in the _map_. There goes this freeway called Länsiväylä to Helsinki. Lots of busses are going to Helsinki from there. In Helsinki you need to walk a bit to the train station. Hartwall arena is in Pasila which is the first stop. So it won't take long to travel there.
Welcome. Feel free to ask more. And hopefully this message was any help. I know writing English isn't my best skill.

NO, you cannot take the subway, because sub/metro/underground doesn´t go to Pasila. Only tram, bus and train goes to Pasila. The most easiest way is to take local train from the Helsinki railwaystation. Every train stops at Pasila station which is the first stop, you cannot miss it.miinus wrote:Wouldn´t it be easier and cheaper to take a subway from Helsinki centre to Hartwall Arena? I´m not sure but I would do so.
It is the cheapiest way also, coz you´ll need to buy 2 zone ticket(3,40 euros) when traveling by bus from Matinkylä and the same ticket is valid in the local train, so no extra ticket/cost is required. Remember that the ticket is valid for one hour. When travelling within the Helsinki city area you´ll need only 1 zone ticket(2euros).

Oh Man. you guys are FANTASTIC
Thank you so much for all your help, this is GREAT.
All this information is really putting my mind at ease. As you can imagine going to a foreign country for the first time is both exciting and a little scary...lol
But this is sooooo cool, I'll already know all the local bus, tram and train stuff before I get there, so I won't be worried about getting lost.
We'll have to meet up with all you guys and buy you a beer to say thanks for all your help

The only bad thing is that we can only come and stay for 3 weeks. I wish it was more like 3 months
Thanks again guys you're great!!!!

actually, it was more like 8-10 USD, I forgot how weak the US dollar is now!!! In areans, beer and liquor are very high, especially in large cities. However, if you go to a pub, you can get the same beer for $2-4 for a small pint. I usually sneak a small bottle of whiskey in the venue when I go to a concert. at small places that Maiden played in the Blaze years, beers were 5-7 USD.Alex Machine wrote:^ 10-12 USD for a small pint?I thought beer and ligger was supposed to be cheap in States...
I'm from the United States, but nobody's perfect.

Even more expensive.
How about a glass of water?

So how much are we talking for buying a bottle of spirits from.......um I'm not sure what you guys would call them, but here we call them "bottle-o's" or just plain "bottle shops"?
And is it legal to drink alcohol out in public in Finland? Like, can we go down to the beach with a bottle or some beers and have a few?

wow. here in the states, you can get a 1.57L bottle of cheap vodka/whiskey for about that price.Alex Machine wrote:A bottle (0,5l) of cheap vodka or similar spirit is around 10 euros. Drinking in public is basically ok, if you don't disturb anyone. The policeman in place will make the call...

Hello there boys and girls
It's been a while since I last popped in to say hello.
We've been extra busy down here trying like mad to get this trip organised. And on top of that we went to see Anthrax play here in Melbourne last night with the original members and we had a fucking ball, my ears are still ringing.
Hope you guys are all well and happy, and counting the sleeps until Maiden and Sabbath gigs... I know I am..we're down to 50 for Sabbath, 51 & 52 for Maiden
Our flights have finally been booked and it looks like we will arrive at Helsinki Airport on Saturday the 2nd of July at 12:35pm.
I'm so excited I'm starting to feel the butterflies in my stomach, although not as bad as my husband because he is scared of heights
Just to give you an idea, we will be up in the air for a total of 22 and a half hours, so he may need a good strong drink when we finally land
Can't wait to get there, this is gunna be a MAD holiday
MAIDEN!!!!!!!!!
Stay happy and look after yourselves...c-yas soon
Ange
XOXOXO

um......shit, good questionNoMoreLies wrote:^Do u come 12:35 in Australian time or 21:35 in Finnish, or do we have the same? Don't now...

I'm assuming it will be Finnish time. We told our travel agent we absolutely had to be in Helskini on the 2nd of July to check into the Motel, so I can only assume that it is 12:35pm Finnish time.
But thanks for asking that mate, now I'll make sure to find out

Welcome to Finland MaidenOz. You're coming over here just two days before me and my wife head back to Helsinki from Brisbane on the 4th of July. We'll almost go straight to the Arena from the Airport to see the Black Sabbath gig. Its going to be a tuff week thou cause we are also going to both of the Maiden gig's that week. But hopefully we get to rest the rest of the week before going back to work.
We both hope that you have a great holiday in Finland as we are sure we will have a great time in Australia.

Oh WOW DevilLook welcome to Australia
Queensland is a beautiful state, and I'm sure you will enjoy your stay in Brisbane. It is also the perfect time of year to visit as you will still get the beautiful weather but not the humidity.
From memory I think the average temperature in winter in Queensland is about 25 degrees C.
I recommend you take a drive up to Noosa Heads it is a beautiful town. Hopefully you will also get a chance to visit the Great Barrier Reef, but it is a bit of a long drive from Brisbane up that way, and you would probably need to book a night or two in a motel somewhere to get the most out of your visit further north. Maybe from Brisbane you would be able to take a daytrip to some Islands, Fraser Island would probably be the largest in that area.
There is also the Tourist parks like, Sea World, and Movie World. I haven't been to Queensland since I was a child myself, but it is such a beautiful place I'm sure you will enjoy yourselves very much.
Have a wonderful holiday in Australia
