Funny Festivals

Post by MaidenOZ »

Well time to make a new thread I think.......

I'm always up for a good laugh, so I thought I'd put this thread up here for you guys in Finland, and those from other countries, to post up links or just general information on the silliest, funniest, downright hilarious festivals and events you might have in your countries.....
I'll start.......

Here in Australia, in the top end of the country where they only have 2 seasons, wet and dry, it's always above 30C all year round, there are 2 festivals which stand out in my memory. I haven't been to them myself yet, but I will one day for sure....

The first is The Beer Can Regatta.
Here's some info about it and some pics if you want to check it out.
Mindil Beach in Darwin is the scene of the yearly Beer Can Regatta, where participants make good use of the thousands of aluminium beer cans by making boats in all shapes and sizes from them and then proceed to hold mock battles in the shallow sea there. Children, too, participate, although they may only use softdrink cans!
The main event is a race between boats built entirely out of beer cans. Very much a family day out for locals and a rapidly becoming spectacular for the tourists to Darwin who line Mindil Beach cheering as the home made boats of beercans wallow, flounder and sink. The fleet includes all kinds of canoes, speedboats, and giant Viking warships with fire hoses and top secret weaponry.

Henley-on-Todd Regatta
This one would probably describe the Aussie sense of humour pretty acurately. A boat race in a river with no water. If it happens that there has been a good rain one year and the river is filled with water, the boat race has to be cancelled. Here's some more info and pics....

Alice Springs, in the arid Centre, is the scene for the yearly Henley-on-Todd Regatta, where "boatraces" are held with bottomless boats, held up by the contestants who have to run through the dry riverbed. There are crazy bathtub races too and whole naval battles by, among others, "Vikings" and "Pirates" crewing battle boats which are mounted on truck's chassis, bristling with mortars and high pressure coloured water cannons hurling flour bombs at their opponents. But if it rains and there is water in the river, the boat race has to be cancelled!
In 1962, the idea was taken up to hold a rowing and sailing regatta in Alice Springs - and the fact that the town was 1500 kms from the nearest large body of water was never seen as a problem. So, to parody the annual boating regatta between Oxford and Cambridge Universities on the Thames, they named the event the Henley-on-Todd.

Now come on.....I know you Finns have a great sense of humour. Let us know all the craziness you get up to

Well... Every single festival is funny and crazy here, apart from Tuska festival (´cause it´s City Festival). Imagine going to middle of nowhere with your friends, and pack only food and alcohol (spend 100 euro to alcohol and 20 to food) to go with you. Maybe even a tent if you have one and don´t want to sleep outdoors.
First thing when you arrive is to drink a bottle of kossu/vodka, and get ridiciously drunk and miss all the bands on the bill. And then drink more... and more...and more. And then you´re most likely to vomit all morning and next day, until you start drinking again in the afternoon.

That´s how we finns like to spend our summers... wasted in a middle of forest.

AUSTRALIA... CAN YOU FESTIVAL? :D (sorry, very known finnish bad humour)

There's couple of strange contests here in Finland:

Taking A Sauna Contest (how long you can last in over hundred degree sauna?)

Carrying The Wife Contest (husbands carry their wifes trough some track)

Throwing The Boot Contest (simple: throw the boot)

Sitting In A Nest Of Ants Contest (just sit to the nest of ants naked for long as you can)

Killing The Mosquitos Contest (kill as many of mosquitos you can within some minutes)

Yes, we finns are really strange population :D

Sorry for my english, i'm a little bit tired by now. If someone wants to fix something or add something, be my guest.

^^Plus when you are completely pissed, you have to be careful because you are an easy target for bastard robbers who will rob you of the few silly euros you have left and you're simply too drunk to realize what's going on.
Like asa already said, When you get back home you realize that you didn't see any of the bands you went to check out because you were lying passed out in a bush somewhere in the festival area. You also notice that there's no money left in your wallet (or there might be no wallet at all) even though you are sure you didn't buy anything.
Something always gets broken or lost during a festival. That's an unwritten rule, one might say.

There's some Finnish festival culture for you.
