Ei jumalaare, tiesin että levymyynti on nykyään heikkoa, mutta että näin heikkoa kuten Tolkki tummennetussa kohdassa kertoo
Symfonia forumilta:
Nobody in the "middle league" is selling tons of albums anymore.
The best selling album of Stratovarius is Infinite with around 200 000 copies.
Elysium's figures are around 35 000 copies, which is good fo these days.
To be number one
in Finnish TOP 50 requires sales of 500 copies in a week (I know it's difficult to believe but it is true).
Symfonia reached number 9 with sales of 300 copies.
To be able to survive in this massive change, which involves ALL areas, including touring, will not
be easy. I am speaking as a professional musician earning my living from this and I have been following
the trend for years already and it's a downward spiral.
Timo Tolkki wrote in Facebook:
Being day by day more aware of the situation that is ongoing in the music business, especially in the so called "middle weight" league, so not "heavy weight league" artists like Metallica, I have become more and more concerned how to produce quality music and shows.
Having been one of the fortunate ones who has been able to earn a living with music since over 15 years, it seems that things will not be so easy in the future.
Now the situation is often that the record labels don't pay advances at all anymore, demand a slice of merchandise and publishing, all very important sources of income for professional musician.
Gone are the days when the income was safe and sure.
Also since the record sales and therefore income are decreasing, more and more bands want to earn money by touring which in turn results that the people of course don't have the money to invest to all the concerts they would like to see.
Is there a solution to all of this? For sure the whole music industry as we know it, is dying but what does it mean? Do I finally have to open that Flowershop I have joked about for all my career. As it turns out to be, it's not a joke anymore. The situation is more bad than an average person probably can understand.
So what are my choices being almost 46 years old? Do I want to start "from over"? Definetely not. I rather walk away or release my music for free and get a job than that.
In some ways the music will always be part of me. At present moment I just cannot say how big part.
Just a little late nite thoughts. Have a good night. Or day.
