JON OLIVA's PAIN Guitarist MATT LaPORTE Passes
News is still coming in, but JON OLIVA's PAIN guitarist and collaborator with many a Florida based metal outfit, guitarist Matt LaPorte has passed away. CIRCLE II CIRCLE bassist Mitch Stewart referenced the unfortunate event on his Facebook page. More information as it becomes available.

Laporte and Oliva recently scheduled an intimate performance/songwriting clinic at Seminole Music & Sound in Seminole, Florida on May 8th.

Laporte performed on all Jon Oliva's Pain albums from 2004's 'Tage Mahal to last year's Festival.

Olis luullu että Oliva olis huonommassa kondiksessa, mutta Jonille tää on kyllä taas pirun raskas paikka, mitenköhän mies jaksaa jatkaa keikkailua tästä eteenpäin? Vai olisiko musiikki sitten auttavana voimana, en tiedä. Nyt pitää toivoa että Jon jaksaa eteenpäin ja olisi keskuudessamme vielä pitkään. Ainiin, Jonin serkun poika Joey Olivahan kuoli viime joulukuussa auto-onnettomuudessa, että huhhuijaa.

WTF oli ajatukset kyllä kun sain asiasta tietää. Matt oli todella tärkeä palanen bändissä, Festivalilla varsinkin ja saapa nähdä tyssääkö koko bändi tähän. Andy Lee olisi toki vapaana nykyään mutta jaksaakohan Olivaa kiinnostaa.
Jälleen pääsee toteamaan että onneksi tuli lähdettyä keikalle (2009) eikä arvottua. Mistä puheenollen, Sauna-liput pitäisi ostaa kohta...

Damond Jiniya on kaivettu jostakin esiin kertomaan kryptisempiä juttuja. On siinä porua, vuosia ja päihdeongelmia yhden kiertueen laulaneelta kaverilta.

Floridassa on viikonloppuna pidetty pienehkö Matt LaPorten tribuuttikonsertti, jossa Jon Oliva's Painin lisäksi näyttäisi Crimson Glory vetäneen muutaman akustisen biisin. JOP:n kitaristeina toimivat bändissä aiemminkin ainakin kiertueilla vaikuttanut Jerry Outlaw ja joku Justin Walker, olisikohan niin että bändi jatkaa näillä herroilla. Ja bändihän tosiaan jatkaa, Chris Kinder on kirjoitellut tämmöistä bändin foorumille kesäkuussa:

As of today...and yesterday for that matter, there is ZERO
chance that JOP will stop. To add to the mix, Jon is once
again dealing with another family health issue and we hope
to begin discussions on our next mission very soon. Please
say another prayer for him and his family.

And no, Oliva himself is not sick....in fact despite all the
emotional turmoil and sadness he is very focused
on the next chapter of our journey.

We of course mourn the loss of Matt everyday, and the life
of Greg Marchak and Criss Oliva. We fully recognize that life
goes on...and so will we. We didn't work this hard and fight
so many battles just to give up!

Pitkästä aikaa tänne kirjoittelee, mutta päivitetääs nyt Savatage mietteet. Vihdoin tuli hommattua bändin levyjä ja olen aivan huumassa. Hall of the Mountain King jäi vielä pakollisista hakematta, mutta Gutter-Streets-Thorns kolmikko päätyi levyhyllyyn. Yksittäin olin kaikilta kappaleita kuunnellut ja minulla oli käsitys/luulo, että Edge of Thorns on näistä levyistä heikoin. Olin aivan väärässä. Kaikki kolme ovat mahtavia lättyjä, mutta Edge of Thorns on ehkä kaikkein tasaisin. Ei siinä ole hakemallakaan huonoa kappaletta... Aivan käsittämättömän kovaa kamaa. Päällimmäisenä Follow me, nimiraita, Conversation piece, He carves his stone ja Damien. Gutter Balletin "hitit" on ehkä vielä kovempia ja silläkin on tasaista laatua. Streets on taasen erinomainen konseptilevy ja toimii erinomaisesti myös yksittäisinä kappaleina. Streetsin vahvuus on myös materiaalin monipuolisuus. Levyn kappaleet onnistuvat melko hyvin olemaan erilaisia. En mä osaa oikein laittaa näitä kolmea edes järjestykseen.

Molemmat laulajat ovat kyllä erinomaisia, mutta kallistun Jon Olivan puoleen persoonallisuuden vuoksi. On omissa kirjoissa nyt yksi kovimmista vokalisteista. Se tunne ja intohimo on niin olennainen osa bändin soundia. Savatage on muuten omissa kirjoissa paras heavy-orkesteri käyttämään koskettimia. Sopivat kuin nakutettu kappaleisiin. Onhan nuo melodiatkin upeita ja Criss Olivan työskentely on joka levyllä taidetta.

JON OLIVA'S PAIN drummer Christopher Kinder has issued the following update:

"Jon [Oliva, JON OLIVA'S PAIN/SAVATAGE mastermind] and I will begin the daunting task of going through new material as we prepare for a new JON OLIVA'S PAIN CD, due out in 2012. First day is always interesting. You never know what Jon Oliva has up his sleeve."

JON OLIVA'S PAIN guitarist Matt Laporte passed away at his home in Florida on April 20. A memorial concert was held on July 23 in St. Petersburg, Florida.

JON OLIVA'S PAIN's fourth album, "Festival", was released in North America on April 12, 2010. The CD, which was issued in Europe on February 19, 2010 via AFM Records, entered the German Media Control chart at position No. 87.

CIRCLE II CIRCLE, the band formed by ex-SAVATAGE frontman Zak Stevens, has been confirmed for next year's edition of the Wacken Open Air festival, set to take place August 2-4, 2012 in Wacken, Germany. The group will be joined at the event by special guest guitarist Chris Caffery (SAVATAGE, TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA) for a special performance of the classic 1997 SAVATAGE album "The Wake Of Magellan" (which featured both Stevens and Caffery) in its entirety.

Pitkään Zak taistelikin tämmöistä nostalgisointia vastaan kuten muistamme esim. viimevuotisen CIIC-keikan settilistasta. Mutta tarkemmin ajatellen näiden hienojen biisien esittäminenhän on Zakille nykyään suorastaan velvollisuus kun Oliva ei sitä kuitenkaan tee eikä TSO varsinkaan. JON OLIVA'S PAIN, the Florida-based band led by SAVATAGE mastermind Jon Oliva, will play SAVATAGE's classic 1987 album, "Hall Of The Mountain King", in its entirety at next year's Bang Your Head!!! festival, set to take place July 13-14, 2012 in Balingen, Germany. Joining JON OLIVA'S PAIN for the "Hall" 25th-anniversary performance will be Oliva's SAVATAGE bandmate Chris Caffery. Caffery and JON OLIVA'S PAIN are also expected to play several songs from DOCTOR BUTCHER, the early 1990s project created by Oliva and Caffery at a time when they were not active members of SAVATAGE.

"Hall Of The Mountain King" was the first SAVATAGE album to be produced by Paul O'Neill and it showed the beginning of the band's progressive tendencies as they explored new forms of expression in their music. Many fans consider this LP a turning point in SAVATAGE's musical identity. As the group's first concept effort, it had a constant tone and was more complex than their previous albums, with two entirely instrumental tracks that go beyond simple guitar riffs and solos, namely "Prelude To Madness" and "Last Dawn".

JON OLIVA'S PAIN To Celebrate SAVATAGE's Hall Of The Mountain King, DOCTOR BUTCHER With Anniversary Shows

SAVATAGE's metal masterpiece Hall Of The Mountain King was released in 1987. Then came the brutal debut release from DOCTOR BUTCHER in 1995. Now after 25 years, JON OLIVA'S PAIN will bring both these albums to the Europe Festival/venue stages in 2012 as they perform an anniversary
assault of music from both iconic records.

Along with HOTMK and Doctor Butcher, the band will perform additional Savatage and JOP songs and continue to celebrate the life and work of JOP's recently departed guitarist and brother, Matthew LaPorte.

The lineup will consist of Jon Oliva (vocals and keys), Christopher Kinder (drums), Jerry Outlaw (guitars), Jason Jennings (bass) and a very special guest guitarist to be announced soon.

ZAK STEVENS - "I Am Always In Favor Of SAVATAGE Doing Any Type Of Project"

John Parks from Legendary Rock Interviews spoke with singer Zak Stevens (CIRCLE II CIRCLE, SAVATAGE, TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA) recently about a number of topics. A few excerpts from the chat follow:

LRI: Were you guys all taken aback by what happened with 'Christmas Eve Sarajevo' which eventually paved the way for Trans Siberian Orchestra?

Stevens: "Yeah, we were taken aback because we had this rock record, this Savatage record and all of a sudden these two DJ’s, one in Tampa and another guy in New York City got ahold of that song and said “This is a major hit” and just leapt on it and played it. TSO was pretty much born at that point in 1997. That’s what I think about when I think about 1997 for sure. It really created a strange situation because the rest of the album is such hard rock and metal stuff that you really aren’t prepared to have a follow up single for something like that. It really just BECAME this massive Christmas hit and at that point Paul said “Hey, we can make a spinoff and form this Trans Siberian Orchestra and really be prepared in case something like this happens again and we can re-release something every year and be ready. All that good business stuff was very well-considered as you can see from TSO’s 13 year history it really has paid off and worked great which we have all gotten to enjoy and are thankful for. At the time that song took off though it was VERY strange because we were all just looking at each other like “What next single? (laughs)”. It was very unexpected and very weird and to be honest I still think it’s even stranger that hardly any of the majority of TSO fans realize that the Sarajevo song was initially released on a Savatage album that came out in 1996."

LRI: I have to ask. With the entire catalog being remastered and the DVD/hits package out what would you say to putting Savatage back together for another album or at least some special show dates?

Stevens: "Yeah, definitely John. People have been obviously asking me that question for a long time and the guys in the band know my stance on that. I am always in favor of SAVATAGE doing any type of project. I would love to do it again just for all the memories and to be able to look across the stage and see the guys again. It would be unbelievable after all these years and of course the fans would just love it. I don’t know how much of a chance there is of that happening because I don’t know all of that inside business and the talk of how that’s going as much as Paul or Jon do."

LRI: Chris Caffery has told me that despite the success of TSO he misses Savatage

Stevens: "I know, as do I. We talked about it about a short while ago on the phone and it’s funny (laughs)…….It seems to me that every time we play a show as TSO it makes it that Savatage is a little bit further and further from going away completely so it’s actually working the opposite as some people might believe (laughs). The funny thing is I would LOVE to do it, they can depend on me for that, hopefully something like that could work out someday like you said, even if it were for a few little things it would be a lot of fun. There is not a question whatsoever about whether I would do it and they know that. It would only take ONE phone call and I’m in."

Luin tässä juuri Chris Cafferyn nettisivuilta biografiaa ja törmäsin seuraavaan mielenkiintoisen tekstin pätkään:

Savatage is working on a new CD that will feature Al and myself on lead guitar. It will also feature the lead singing of Jon Oliva along with our new Savatage vocalist, Damond Jiniya. I will be helping Zak Stevens on his first solo CD. This should be out next in early 2003. Recently, John West recorded his new solo CD called Earthmaker. I played guitars along with Mike Clasciak from the band Halford. This will be released world wide in September. I am also hoping to get a side project I have with Blitz from Overkill off the ground this year, too. A post nuclear Black Sabbath!!!

^ Joskus luin jostain että nuo biisinraakileet käytettiin sittemmin JOP:n ekalla levyllä. Wikipedia tosin sanoo, ilman lähdettä tietenkin, että esim. Nonsensible Ravings -biisi olisi Poets and Madmenin sessioista jäänyt. Myös CIIC:n ekalla levyllä on muistaakseni useampiakin Oliva/Caffery -sävellyksiä että olisikohan ne siinä sitten.

Eivät ole v-replicaa, vaikka laihahkoja digipakeja ovatkin. Ei Ear Music onneksi harrasta moista tauhkaa. Aivan hyvin tehtyjä, vaikkeivat 2002-essee-remasterien tasoa olekaan. Noissa on vain yhden sivun verran juttua, mutta uusia bonareita on Jon äänittänyt useimpien kylkiäisiksi. Huoletta voin suositella, varsinkin tuohon hintaan!

Jos käännän nyt päätä vasemmalle ja katson omasta hyllystä, niin ei esimerkiksi uusin Astral Doors (Jerusalem) ole digipakina sen leveämpi tai laihempi kuin nuo. Usein tuon paksuisia jos ja kun vihko on kannen takana taskussa, eikä esimerkiksi omassa taittovälissään silleen v'ttumaisesti sieltä seinään takaa kalastettavana.

CIRCLE II CIRCLE, the band formed by ex-SAVATAGE frontman Zak Stevens, rejoined by guitarist Bill Hudson (ex-CELLADOR) for their upcoming European dates, which include an appearance at this year's edition of the Wacken Open Air festival in Wacken, Germany. The Wacken concert will contain a special performance of the entire classic 1997 SAVATAGE album "The Wake Of Magellan", which featured Stevens.

In other news, CIRCLE II CIRCLE has teamed up with Rage On Stage Management for the the territories of USA and Canada. Stevens commented on the new partnership: "I'm very excited to announce that CIRCLE II CIRCLE has teamed up with Rage On Stage Management for management, promotions, and booking in the USA and Canadian territories. This was a move we needed to make to increase our overall presence here at home and in Canada. We're really looking forward to connecting with a lot more of our fans across North America as a result of this signing."

Frank James, the president of Rage On Stage Management, added: "Through my musical years, SAVATAGE has always been a staple of my diverse sense and taste in a band. These guys have obviously paved a road for which many continue to follow and with Stevens keeping that door open with CIRCLE II CIRCLE, fans of then and now couldn’t be happier."

CIRCLE II CIRCLE is currently working on a new album, entitled "Seasons Will Fall", for an early 2013 release.

The band's first-ever career retrospective, "Full Circle - The Best Of", will be made available in Europe on July 20. The collection contains highlights from CIRCLE II CIRCLE's five studio albums plus many B-sides, bonus tracks and rare songs. All tracks have been remastered for this compilation exclusively.

Nähtiin tsorl & co. kanssa sitten sen kokoonpanon viimeisiä keikkoja Domissa, kun John Osbornen kanssa rymyttiin, Stevensin kanssa yhteiskuvissa kaikki Hammeria & Wratchchildia myöten + Andy Lee olikin ihmeen poissaoleva, syystäkin ilmeisesti.

Itse asiassa Andy Lee palasi jo bändiin viime joulukuussa mutta ilmeisesti on taas poistunut. Ei tämä nyt mitenkään erityisen hyvää lupaile, paljosta vetoa että nuo uudet kaverit ovat jostain saksalaisesta Savatage-tribuuttibändistä? Jospa C2C:n kaava (joka toinen levy on hyvä) sentään pystyttäisiin rikkomaan tällä Seasons Will Fallilla, Consequence of Power oli tosiaan aika hyvä esitys eikä keikalla edes rieponut paljoakaan että soittivat melkein koko levyn.
