Hey, Friends,

First of all, I have to thank everyone who came out to see us in Texas, Sweden, Spain and Japan. It was sweeter than ever 20 years later.

I'm extremely sad to report that those will probably be the last shows I ever do with Riot.

We have differences about how to proceed with the future of the band that we can't reconcile, so a majority of the other members have decided to look for a new singer. It wasn't my decision, and there's really no good reason for us to part ways. You may hear a lot of noise from some of the other guys, but the truth is that it's all a pointless misunderstanding over a refusal to compromise.

No matter, because I've just been in touch with the rest of the guys from Faith And Fire, and we're beginning work on a new album immediately. There's no way I'm going to let a year's worth of preparation and practice go to waste. My voice is as strong as ever, and you will hear it again soon.

Thanks again to everyone who made these shows a miracle for me. Your support has kept me strong and I'll be back before you know it.

See you out there with a new Faith And Fire album in 2010!

No hö, kai niille eroille on bändikuvioissakin aina joskus ihan oikeat syyt olleet: usein turhaa tekohengitystä palata yhteen (onneksi ei kuitenkaan aina).

Viikko sitten Wienissä löytyi muuten uuden kaupungin ostoskadun sivukujalta Totem Records -niminen puoli; kaameaa occult-satanism-kvlt-kamaa täynnä ja niin hämärä selata alahyllyjen käytettyjä että teki mieli heittää kassan Peter Steele-lookalikelle että laittaa valot päälle. Uusien levyjen hyllyt olivat niin täynnä 'en-oo-ikään-kuullutkaan' -bändejä ettei tosikaan; huvittavasti suomalaisten runsaan määrän lisäksi. Spinefolk-ym. pääsee näköjään kriteereistä läpi euroopan ug:ssä muovipagan-jutuillaan
Mutta siis: puolen h selaamisen jälkeen löysin sentään (uuden & alkup. Sentencedin Love & Death ep:n lisäksi) jotakin ostettavaa: puuttuneet RIOT:in Inishmore (1998) & Sons Of Society (1999) cd:t 6 & 7€ kpl. Joku hörhöhän pitäisi noitakin tavallista erikoisempina, koska itse levyissä on tämä "promotional copy -not for sale" -painatus molemmissa; muutoin ihan normaali-retailia kokonaisine biiseineen, vihkoineen & jewelcaseineen. Varmaan silloin 10 v. sitten on jokin zinearvostelija kiikuttanut inhoten vaihdossa tuonne condemned-tavaran sekaan

Inishmore on kyllä hyvä levy kaikin puolin, Sons of Society taas on ehkä minun rankingissa se heikoin Dimeo-levy. Mikä on sikäli vähän ihmeellistä kun ne kaikki on suoraan sanoen melkein sama levy eri kansilla, mutta SoS:lla soundimaailma etenkin tökkii. Brethren of the Long Housen ja Nightbreakerin varalta kannattaa myös pitää silmät auki jos nuo levyt iskee, ja en kyllä tiedä miksei iskisi.

Jokohan Mark Reale laittaa kitaran naulaan vai nähdäänkö vielä viides levyttävä Riot-vokalisti... livenä hommissa jo ollut Mike Tirelli olisi hyvä vaihtoehto. Silläkin oli vasta joku vatsasyöpä mutta taisi olla kuitenkin toipumaan päin.

Joo, on mulla nuo kaikki koneella tietysti, mutta Nightbreaker kiinnostaa erityisesti josko joku joskus antikvariaattiin veisi.

Bobby Jarzombek vastasikin tuohon yllä esittämääni lopettamispohdintaan:

"Speaking of reunions, I went to Japan in October with the RIOT 'Thundersteel' lineup. We did Osaka and two nights at Club Citta in Kawasaki.

"Japan has always been a special place for RIOT and this time was no different. The fans were great and the shows went well considering we barely had any time to rehearse and couldn't do any warm-up shows Stateside.

"As you've probably heard by now, these were our last shows with Tony Moore on vocals. There will be a statement from the band on this matter but let me just say we that plan to move on with a new vocalist and a new album in 2010.

Mike DiMeo näkyy jatkavan myös hevihommia Creation's End -bändin myötä. Musiikkia luonnehditaan seuraavin latteuksin: "melodic, touches of prog, a strong sense of groove, and brutally heavy and dark", ääninäytteitä ei vielä ole...

Uusi biisi "Wings are for Angels" on julkaistu jollain hyväntekeväisyyskokoelmalla Japanissa ja onhan se toki vuotanutkin jo. Tämän biisin soittivat jo kaksi vuotta sitten Sweden Rockissakin, sitä vauhdikkaampaa Riotia ja Jarzombekin kolkuttelun kyllä tunnistaa aina!

Riot kiertää Eurooppaa Hammerfallin "special guestina" syksyllä! Jymy-yllätyksenä kiertue ei ulotu Suomeen mutta lähin Tukholman keikka on kuitenkin lauantai-iltana että hmm...

Joacim Cans, vocalist and frontman of HammerFall comments: “For thirty years I have been a true and devoted Riot fan. Albums like “Fire Down Under” and “Thundersteel” have inspired me immensely, both as a singer and a songwriter, and the honest truth is that I would probably not be here today if it wasn’t for Riot. As a homage to the band we also covered their classic song “Flight of the Warrior” on the album “Masterpieces” in 2008. I am totally psyched about having Riot as our special guest for the first leg of the European tour and I can assure you that I will be in the audience banging my head and singing along in every song…every single night! Hell Yeah! ”

RIOT’s founder member Mark Reale is equally enthusiastic: “This tour is going to blow a lot of cobwebs away. We’ve been dying to get the band back over the Europe where we’ve always had such a loyal following. This is like a dream come true for all of us, and the timing, with the new album ready to roll, couldn’t be better.”

This will be the first time the legendary ‘Thundersteel’ and ‘The Privilege Of Power’ line-up of Tony Moore (vocals), Mark Reale (guitar), Mike Flyntz (guitar), Don Van Stavern (bass) and Bobby Jarzombek (drums) has played in Europe on a full tour, after the band’s celebrated one-off show at Sweden rock festival in 2009. Having signed with SPV worldwide except for Japan where they are signed to Avalon Marquee, RIOT are currently finalizing their new album Immortal Soul which is due in October. The dates with Hammerfall will therefore also be an opportunity for fans to hear new material from the band’s upcoming – and long-awaited – fourteenth album.

Newcomers Amaranthe just recently released their debutalbum which charted #1 in Japan is set as main support at “European Outbreak 2011”. Huh huh. Aika mykistävää kansitaidetta, olisikohan jopa kautta aikain bändin huonoin? Ja niitä huonoja kansiahan Riotilla riittää. Privilege of Power ehkä ainoa jota voi sanoa ei-hassuttelumielessä hienoksi kanneksi.

Miten niin? Mun mielestä ainakin Nightbreakerissä on hieno kansi (se versio jossa on hai), kuten myös Naritassa ja Fire Down Underissa, joka mulla on myös paitana! Privilegessä on ehkä "normaalein" kansi mutta ei siinä mun mielestä mitään hienoa ole. Toi uus nyt on aika käppänen.

Kova bändi, vaikka hyllystä löytyykin vasta Thundersteel, Fire Down Under ja Restless Breed. Noista eniten on tullut kuunneltua ekaksi mainittua, kun siitä ei meinaa etsimälläkään löytää heikkoa kohtaa! Etenkin viisi ensimmäistä biisiä ja Bloodstreets ovat sitä kuuluisaa parhautta. Fire Down Underkin on helvetin hyvä. Ainoa vähän hämärämpi biisi on levyn lopettava ylipitkä outro Flashbacks. Restless Breed on jäänyt ehkä vähän etäämmäksi, kun sen aikainen laulaja jotenkin kummasti tökkää omaan korvaan. Privilege of Power täytyisi ostaa mahd. nopeasti! Ihan järjettömän hyvä levy, mitä nyt olen pariin kertaan kuunnellut sen koneelta.

^^ Nightbreakerin haikannesta olen kyllä samaa mieltä kun nyt tarkemmin ajattelen ja Through the Stormin kannen voisi myös luokitella yksinkertaisuudessaan aika miellyttäväksi. Minulle kuitenkin kaikki kannet joissa on tämä maskottikoala (Johnny?) menevät nimenomaan huumorilokeroon. Tätä uusinta lähinnä masentaa katsoa, on kuin screenshotti Ed Hunter -pelistä.

Vanhempi Riot on vielä vähän tuntematonta aluetta Naritaa lukuun ottamatta, mutta Thundersteel nousi heti kättelyssä Top 10 metal-levyjen listalle, kun sain sen huuto.netistä voittamani levypaketin mukana. Minulla ei ollut suoraan sanoen mitään aavistusta, mitä oli odotettavissa, kun laitoin levyn soittimeen. "Pikainen kuuntelu ja kirppikselle" taisi olla ensimmäinen ajatus ennen kuin avausraidaksi sijoitettu nimibiisi pärähti käyntiin. Toisessa kertosäkeessä jo nousi nyrkki pystyyn ja hymy ylsi ohimolahdekkeisiin asti. Taisi siinä myös pari-kolme kertaa tulla kiekaistua kovaa ja korkealta "Thunderstee-e-e-eeel!!!"

Siinä vaiheessa kun Johnny's Back pääsi huikeaan finaaliinsa tiesin, että olen pitkästä aikaa löytänyt levyn, joka ei hevillä tule ulos soittimesta. Ja sitten vielä kakku kruunattiin jumalaisella "neon lights"-henkisellä hehkutuksella nimeltä Bloodstreets ja vastustamattomalla, miltei hypnoottisella, kertosäkeellä varustetulla Run for Your Lifellä. Olin totaalisen myyty ja olen edelleen. Paras ensi kertaa kuulemani levy sitten Turisaksen The Varangian Wayn (n. kolme vuotta sitten).

Nyt vain pitäisi laittaa Amazoniin tilaus vetämään ja hankkia muukin tuotanto tarkasteltavaksi. Toivotaan, että ovat edes puoliksi yhtä hyviä kuin Thundersteel, niin eiköhän kaikista iloa riitä taas joksikin aikaa.

Nyt vain pitäisi laittaa Amazoniin tilaus vetämään ja hankkia muukin tuotanto tarkasteltavaksi. Toivotaan, että ovat edes puoliksi yhtä hyviä kuin Thundersteel, niin eiköhän kaikista iloa riitä taas joksikin aikaa.

Eipä siellä ole oikeastaan yhtään Thundersteelin tapaista, em. TPOP nyt lähimpänä niin ajallisesti kuin miehistönkin takia, mutta sillekin ehtivät jo hieman muuttumaan. Aivan hyvä vain, hyviä ne on silti. Osta vaikka Sons Of Society (ysärin DiMeo-Riotia tuli hyvin ostettua Wieniläisestä KVLT-kaupasta paikan ainoina hyvinä levyinä parisen vuotta sitten -täysimittaisina jewel-promoversioina!) ensi hätään.

Privilege of Poweria näkyisi olevan saatavilla ainakin tämmöisenä tuplapakettina Thundersteelin kanssa. Tiedä sitten millainen viritys on kyseessä. Kaikki vastaantulevat Riotin levyt kannattaa aina poimia talteen koska yksikään niistä ei ole huono ja saatavuus on nykyään aivan surkea. Amazonista ja CDUniversesta sain itse pari vuotta sitten kokoelman täydennettyä aika hyvin. Tuotannon tasaisuudesta muuten kertoo ehkä jotain sekin että esim. minä rankkaan tuon Jussin suositteleman Sons of Societyn siksi vähiten hyväksi Riot-levyksi.

Tilasin Through the Stormin Amazonista uuden DT:n ja TNT:n kylkiäiseksi, kun sain siten ilmaiset postit. Kyllä sitten toimii ja lujaa. UFO-coveria lukuun ottamatta aivan mielettömiä biisejä koko albumi täynnä.

Nimiraita on ilman muuta Bon Jovin paras biisi sitten vuoden 1992.

RIOT Forced To Pull Out Of HAMMERFALL European Tour - Oct. 10, 2011

Due to complications from singer Tony Moore's emergency oral surgery, legendary U.S. metal band RIOT is disappointed to announce that it will not be able to support HAMMERFALL on the Swedish metal act's previously announced European headlining tour.

A routine dental checkup discovered a deeply infected root canal, and the infection had spread to the jaw and surrounding teeth. The only option was immediate surgery to remove the tooth, as well as a portion of the infected bone tissue, and to perform a large graft with healthy bone from the surrounding area.

Says Tony: "During the initial examination, my doctor gave me a puzzled look and then asked the question that put fear in my heart: 'Are you in a lot of pain?' I was then informed that I would be if this procedure was not performed [as soon as possible]. After the surgery, I was made aware of the extent of the bone graft, and the risk of dislodging fragments of implanted bone should I resume normal activity too soon. I was put on a liquid diet and limited to bed rest for several days, then informed that because of the location of the surgery, singing was out of the question for four weeks. As I write this I still have stitches in my mouth and have to limit my physical activity. The recovery period essentially wiped out any hope of sufficient practice time for a RIOT setlist, and full recovery takes four months before the tooth can be replaced. We discussed all the options we could think of, the last of which was to perform the final 10 dates of the engagement with minimal practice on my part. In then end, though, everyone agreed that going out with my voice at any less than 100 percent would have compromised a show for which some fans have been waiting many years. With heavy hearts we made the only viable decision; to withdraw from the tour."

Commented RIOT in a statement: "The entire RIOT organization would like to apologize to our record label, SPV, and thank them for supporting our decision. We have been assured that future European dates will be announced as soon as the appropriate schedule can be safely booked. We would also like to apologize to HAMMERFALL, who have been extremely generous and supportive throughout this process. We look forward to meeting you all in the near future. Finally we would like to apologize to our fans and friends who have sustained us throughout the reunion. We are as disappointed as you are, but you can be assured that RIOT will visit Europe as soon as possible. We're already confirming dates for early 2012 in the U.S., and we plan to support the release of 'Immortal Soul' as strongly as you have supported us for nearly a quarter of a century.

"A special note to our Asian fans: these events will not have any effect on our plans to perform in Japan in 2012. Tony will be fully recovered long before then, and we look forward to bringing 'Immortal Soul' to you soon. In the meantime, we hope that you enjoy the album as much as we have enjoyed creating it. Let us know what your favorites are so that we can bring them to you onstage next time we meet."

A last note from Tony: "I've been dying to sing this stuff since we finished the album, and being sidelined like this is a major blow. I'm doing everything I can to recover so that I can rebuild the voice you'll hear when the album is released. I know that you want nothing less. Thanks from the bottom of my heart for your support and good wishes."

RIOT's new album, "Immortal Soul", will be released on October 21 in Japan via Marquee/Avalon; October 26 in Scandinavia; October 28 in Germany; Austria and Switzerland; October 31 in the rest of Europe; and November 22 in the U.S. and Canada through Steamhammer/SPV. The effort will be available as a limited digipack with two bonus tracks, double gatefold LP (colored blue vinyl) and regular jewel case.

Riot - Insanity

Ehkäpä uuden levyn paras biisi, on tässä kyllä monta muutakin hyvää. Eli voidaan julistaa että yhtään huonoa Riotin studiolevyä ei ole edelleenkään olemassa!

Elä stana, ainoa minkä kohdalla mie mietin että eikö tämä koskaan lopu, vaikkei mitenkään eeppismittainen olekaan. Mutta päätöskaksikko Believe & Echoes bassareiden rällätyksillään miellyttivät kovasti, kuten myös nimikko ensimmäisenä ja varmaankin tuon ensikuuntelun paras, Fall Before Me. Myös Whiskey Man oli todella hyvä, eihän tuollaisella nimellä olisi kuulunut missään nimessä olla!

Tuota hyvää Whiskey Mania ei kuitenkaan viitsi laskea levyn eliittiin koska siinä Reale kierrättää jo vähän turhan läpinäkyvästi Nightbreakerin Babylon-biisiä. Muutenkin tämä levy on kyllä paljon enemmän DiMeon aikaisia levyjä kuin jotain Thundersteeliä muistuttava, mikä ei ole sinänsä järjellä ajateltuna mikään ihme eikä kyllä huono juttukaan. Vähän olenkin ihmetellyt joitain ulkomaisia arvioita jossa hehkutetaan "paluuta 20 vuoden takaiseen soundiin". Joko nämä arvostelijat eivät ole kuulleet Privilegen jälkeistä Riotia lainkaan ja/tai ovat idiootteja. Kai se on kuitenkin hyvä asia että bändillä on nyt edes jonkinlaista nostetta. Kiertueen perumiset ei tilannetta kyllä paranna ja saisikin tulla niitä uusia päivämääriä kohta, vähän paremman bändin kanssa vaikka ja miksei Suomeenkin!

Powerline: I thought "Thundersteel" was a remarkable comeback album when it came out in 1988. The same can be said for this new album, "Immortal Soul", too …no?

Mark Reale: "Immortal Soul" is basically the follow-up to "Thundersteel" (1998) and "Privilege Of Power" (1990) 20 years later. The sound of the "Thundersteel" lineup is so identifiable and the songs on the new CD have the same feel and sound but with more of a modern power metal twist. This lineup's writing and performing skills have the same kind of magic we had back when we recorded the "Thundersteel" album. I couldn't have asked for more. This CD is definitely a great comeback for us, and everyone gave it their all and brought their "A" game on "Immortal Soul". I'm very proud of the way it came out. The guys did an amazing job and Bruno Ravel did a great mix and production job.

Näköjään en ole kirjoitellut tähän lankaan mitään. Kaikki levyt Naritasta Thundersteeliin asti ovat tuttuja ja erittäin hyviä jokainen. Kokonaisuutena kovin on ehkä sittenkin se Thundersteel, joka on yksi hienoimmista speed-/power-levyistä kautta metallihistorian, mutta myös bändin alkuaikojen aavistuksen enemmän heavy metaliin päin kallella oleva materiaali on lähes yhtä hienoa. Pakko kehaista Restless Breed -levyä, joka häviää vain parin millimetrin erolla Thundersteelille.

Kun Riotista puhutaan, niin kitarasektoria on pakko ylistää. Löytyy Maiden-henkistä melodiaa, Priestin suuntaan kumartavaa riffiä, mutta myös tosi paljon omaa ja tyylitajuista kitarointia. Mark Reale on aika velho kitaristiksi. Bändin eka levyhän tuli jo vuonna 1977, joten yhtye oli kehissä jo ennen kuin Maiden julkaisi mitään.

The Privilege of Poweria on täällä kehuttu sen verran, että pitäähän sekin saada kuunteluun. Onko DiMeon aikakausi musiikillisesti kuinka samanlaista kuin aikaisempien vokalistien luotsaama Riot?

Jos yksi Riot-biisi pitäisi nostaa ylitse muiden, niin minulle se täyden kympin the-biisi on Buried Alive (Tell Tale Heart), jossa on paitsi täydelliset laulumelodiat, huikea kertosäe!, elämää hienommat kitaroinnit ja vieläpä Led Zeppelinin Whole Lotta Loven erään legendaarisen osion mieleentuova "trippivokalisointiosio". Täydellinen päätösbiisi hienolle Thundersteelille.

On muuten ehkä vuoden 2011 parhain tai ainakin hymyilyttävin yksittäinen vokalisointikohta.

Muutoinkin todella hyvä vähän pidemmässäkin juoksussa tämä Immortal Soul, kun mitta on sopiva (meni esim. eilen parin iltaoluen aikana liiankin nopeaan ohitse!) niin en mie sanoisi tällä yhtään heikkoa raitaa olevan. Suosittelen kaikkia testaamaan, kunhan pääsee sysirumasta kannesta ohitse!

No nyt on hallussa Thundersteel, Priviledge of Power, Through the Storm, Army of one ja Immortal Soul, niin fyysisesti kuin kuuntelullisestikin ja onhan tää kova bändi.
Jotenkin aikoinaan meni ohi kokonaan "suurten" jyrätessä (maiden, sabbath, dio, rainbow jne.) ja vasta nyt kiinnostuin, tavallaan Halford-sillan kautta (Jarzombek) eikä mennyt hukkaan pieni investointi levyihin!

Tasaista matskua on kaikilla em. levyillä ja joka lätyllä on 2-4 kohokohtaa joita ei kyllästy kuuntelemaan. Esim. Immortal Soulin aloitusbiisi Riot on jotain ihan sairaan käsittämätöntä!!!
