IRON MAIDEN To Leave SANCTUARY ARTIST MANAGEMENT?

Nick Hasell of Times Online has issued the following report:

IRON MAIDEN, one the world's best-selling heavy metal bands, has put its contract with Sanctuary Group up for review amid talks to take its business to Andy Taylor, the music group's ousted co-founder and former chief executive.

The loss of IRON MAIDEN would be a severe blow to Sanctuary. The band, famously spotted by Mr. Taylor in a London pub in 1979, are its oldest client. The discussions come ahead of the European release next week of "A Matter of Life and Death", IRON MAIDEN's latest album, and the start of a world tour in October, which promise to make the band a particularly significant contributor to Sanctuary's near-term profits.

Pete De Vroome, managing director of Iron Maiden Holdings, the corporate entity that encompasses the band’s interests, said of the contracts with Sanctuary: "All of these are under review." He confirmed that there had been discussions with Mr. Taylor, which are thought to have been under way for several months.

It is thought that the principal, and most lucrative, deal under negotiation is to take IRON MAIDEN's management contract, currently with Sanctuary Artist Management, to Mr. Taylor. However, the band also has numerous subsidiary contracts with Sanctuary.

Friday night (August 25), a source close to the company said: "All artists' contracts come up for discussion from time to time. This one is no different." Mr. Taylor could not be reached for comment.
"The nightmare corpse-city of R'lyeh was built in measureless eons behind history by the vast, loathsome shapes that seeped down from the dark stars. There lay great Cthulhu and his hordes, hidden in green slimy vaults."

According to Hits Daily Double, word inside the Sanctuary Music Group is that Merck Mercuriadis will be leaving the company's management team. GUNS N' ROSES frontman Axl Rose is said to be leaving with Merck as a client of the longtime Sanctuary executive.

Rose has been saying that GUNS N' ROSES' long-delayed new album, "Chinese Democracy", will be out later this year.

IRON MAIDEN Splits With SANCTUARY ARTIST MANAGEMENT

The Sanctuary Group Plc has announced that IRON MAIDEN has not renewed its management agreement with the company. Rod Smallwood, who co-founded Sanctuary in the late '70s, discovered IRON MAIDEN in 1979 and managed them ever since, will also leave Sanctuary simultaneously and will continue to manage the band at his new company Phantom Music Management. Smallwood will also be retained as a consultant to Sanctuary for an initial six-month period. In the meantime, Sanctuary has signed MAIDEN to a new long-term contract for tour, retail and licensing of merchandising rights worldwide with Sanctuary-owned Bravado and has signed the band to a new recording agreement for the USA for their new album "A Matter of Life and Death". Sanctuary Records already has USA rights to the majority of MAIDEN's extensive and valuable catalog and will continue to coordinate with the band the release of new product based on that catalog.

Comments Sanctuary Group CEO Frank Presland: "Although we are obviously sad to see the band and Rod depart from a management and company standpoint we are delighted to be able to continue with the band long term as their worldwide merchandiser and U.S. label. MAIDEN are renowned as one of the biggest-grossing bands in the world in all aspects of merchandising with their distinctive Eddie T-shirts worn by multitudes of fans everywhere and for record-breaking merchandising grosses at major venues all over the world. Our label is also delighted to show what it can do by putting the band's new album in the Billboard Top 10 for the first time, at a time when the band are rapidly increasing their U.S. record-selling and touring base. The MAIDEN catalog has always been our biggest seller in America and we look forward to a fruitful ongoing relationship on this and new product based on the catalog.

"The parting with Rod and MAIDEN is entirely amicable and we are delighted that Rod has made himself available to Sanctuary as a consultant and look forward to a long and valuable relationship with him and the band. All at Sanctuary wish them both the very best for the future."

Adds Rod Smallwood: "It's obviously a bit of a wrench leaving Sanctuary after all these years but at this time in my career and with the band's ever-increasing international stature it makes total sense for me to concentrate on developing the band's huge potential in the many areas of what is now a very complex and time-consuming business. The band and l leave many friends at Sanctuary and we wish them and the company every success in the future and look forward the continuing successful relationships in merchandising and U.S. records."

Tuntuu varmaan Rodilla aika haljulta jättää melkeen 30 vuotta pystyssä ollu oma firma, joka on vielä nimetty Maidenin biisin mukaan :( .

EDIT: Suora lainaus Run to the hillsista: "-- Sanctuary sopi firman nimeksi hienosti. Mä ajattelin: 'Joo, turvapaikka kaikesta musiikkibisneksen paskasta.'" Mikään ei ole ikuista  ...

It was announced today that both Iron Maiden and manager Rod Smallwood are no longer with the Sanctuary group/organisation. Rod has set up a new company Phantom Music Management to continue managing the band and has been joined by his key Maiden players Val and Dave. This new management arrangement will have no effect whatsoever on current and future plans for Maiden, the fan clubs or anything else Maiden related. Rod comments-

'I formed Sanctuary in 1979 and named it after the Maiden song, so its a bit of a wrench leaving after all these years. However in the latter stages of my career I want to be able to fully concentrate on and enjoy managing Maiden without being distracted by other areas of the business. As you all know we have an awful lot going on and we have many exciting plans for the future. The forthcoming European Tour will be incredible and l want to be at as many of the concerts as possible to enjoy the feeling l think you can only really get at a Maiden show! My new company is called Phantom and no prizes for guessing where that came from. Dont worry - its Maiden business as usual!!'

It was announced on Friday (Nov. 3) that both IRON MAIDEN and manager Rod Smallwood are no longer affiliated with Sanctuary Artist Management. Rod has set up a new company, Phantom Music Management, to continue represeting the band and has been joined by his key MAIDEN players Val and Dave. According to Reuters, Sanctuary has struggled since mid-2005 due to delays at loss-making Urban Records, which it bought in 2003 from Mathew Knowles, father of R&B diva Beyonce.

Last month the company shunned a bid approach from MAMA Group, which manages the KAISER CHIEFS and FRANZ FERDINAND, and said it still had a strong independent future.

Smallwood, who was born in the north England town of Huddersfield, started working with Andy Taylor in 1969 in arranging May Balls while studying together at Cambridge University.

In 1979 they took on IRON MAIDEN to start a relationship that led to over 180 platinum and gold awards from some 50 million album sales.
