Uuden singlen kansi on kyllä hieno. Maidenin kansikuvat nyt muutenkin aina hienoja. Paitsi tietenkin tuo viime levyn kansi oli kyllä huono

When 'Brave New world' was released, the majority of people claimed it to be Maiden's best work since 'Seventh Son'..same again with 'Dance Of Death' in 2003. Now here we are in 2006 with their latest opus - A Matter Of Life And Death...and do you know what, this really is their best work since 'Seventh Son'. In fact, i'd go further and say that it is every bit the equal of the 1988 concept album. Whilst the two records are very different musically, they do share a common trait that very few other Iron Maiden albums have enjoyed - absolutely no filler tracks. AMOLAD is jam packed with 10 songs that are so brilliant, you'll be struggling to pick out clear favourites after the first couple of spins.

The album kicks of perfectly with the one-two punch of the 'Different Worlds' (infectiously melodic) and 'These Colours Don't Run' (semi-epic yet pure grandiose Maiden) - both of which are certain to be a part of their live set when they tour later this year. Following that is another tune that's a good contender for a live appearance - the utterly sensational 'Brighter Than A Thousand Suns'. This is one of several multi-layered epics on the album that will have you discovering new things with each subsequent listen - brilliant Maiden, simply brilliant. Other standout songs worthy of note (to be fair they are all 'standout' tracks) - 'The Longest Day' (Harris excels on bass here), 'Out Of The Shadows'(beautifully melancholic)..and 'The Pilgrim' & 'The Reincarnation Of Benjamin Breeg' that have Maiden getting all riffy on us.

A Matter Of Life And Death isn't just a step-up from BNW & DOD, it's in a completely different league. It's almost as if the band were just teasing us on the previous two records, hinting a truly great things but not quite delivering. Well here they are with one of the greatest records they've ever made. This is what we've all been waiting for - Iron Maiden firing on all cylinders...and isn't it just a spectale to behold.

^Tämän tyyppisiä arvioita on saanut lukea jo aika monelta taholta. Alkaa vaikuttaa jo todella mielenkiintoiselta. Tästä tuleekin mieleen, että muistaako kukaan millaisia ensi arvioita oli kun DODia odotettiin? Itse en muista, mutta olisi kiva verrata niitä näihin. Meinaan vaan kuuluuko tällainen hehkuttelu asiaan, vai onko sieltä tulossa jotain oikeasti todella loistavaa.

Liikaa ei saa kuitenkaan odottaa, sillä silloin on yleensä edessä pieni pettymys ja hyvästäkään albumista ei ensikuuntelusta saa samanlaisia kicksejä kuin hyvästä levystä, johon suhtautuu ilman kohtuuttomia ennakko-odotuksia.

Järkyttää yhtä paljon kuin Pelastakaa Sotamies Ryanin Tigeriksi naamioitu T-34 ja vajaan patruunakamman poisto M1 Garand-kivääristä.

No, tuon tiikeri-hommelin ymmärtää vielä. Maailmassa ei ole kuin muutama toimintakuntoista vaunua, ja arvata saattaa kuinka helposti semmoisen saa lainattua leffan tekoon, jossa vehje räjäytetään. Ja replikan rakentaminen taas saattaisi olla melko kallista lystiä... (T-34:sia pyörii taas niin paljon nurkissa, ettei ongelmaa ole)
Mutta oikeasti, kyllä ne rynkyt olisi minusta voinut tehdä oikein. No, kunhan eivät kiertuepaitaan änge sitä logoa...

THE GENERAL CONSENSUS SEEMS TO BE THAT THIS IS THE BEST MAIDEN ALBUM FOR A LONG TIME. WOULD YOU AGREE?
BRUCE:Yes. It's extremely good. We're really proud of it. It takes the band to a whole different level. There's lots of experimentation on it. It shows that we're not hostages to fashion. It's not like we've suddenly decided to go emo or anything like that. God forbid! It sounds like Maiden, but Maiden like you've never heard us before. It's really punchy. Nicko gets my man of the match award. His drumming is unbelievable.
THE ALBUM IS 70 MINUTES LONG AND VERY COMPLEX, BUT YOU FINISHED IN RECORD TOME. HOW DID YOU PULL THAT OFF?
STEVE:I don't know. It's been unbelievable. We booked the studio for three months and we finished within two. I think the preparation was good. The backingtracks went down like a dream. Working with Kevin Shirley was brilliant. He knows what he wants and what we want. We've tried so many recording techniques in the past that you wouldn't believe it, but I really think we found a way to recreate the live sound. It's taken us a few years hasn't it?
IT'S YOUR HEAVIEST AND ANGRIEST ALBUM IN YEARS. DID YOU MAKE A CONCIOUS DECISION TO GET MORE AGGRESSIVE THIS TIME ROUND?
STEVE:I can't really speak for anyone else, but not from my point of view. I think we have been edging that way anyway. On the last two albums there's been heavier and darker stuff.
BRUCE:It's heavy but without being self-parody. It's like all those gargling-with-razorblades bands, where each album sounds like a parody of the one before. It would be easy to go into "all men play on 10" territory but this album is so far away from that.It's pretty spectacular.

DIFFERENT WORLDS
Short, direct, bursting with catchy melodies and stronly reminiscent of Thin Lizzy, this is a classic Maiden album opener.
STEVEIt wasn't intentional when we sat down and wrote it but as soon as we finished it we thought, 'Thin Lizzy'. The vocals remind me a lot of Phil Lynott and the low melodies he used to sing. As soon as we finished this, I knew it was going to be a single.

THESE COLOURS DON'T RUN
This sombre paean to the soldiers of the frontline builds from a brooding intro into a series of dramatic riffs and a huge anthemic chorus.
BRUCEIt's positive, but in a sad way. We're putting a human face on people who fight wars for a living. It's about loyalty, integrity, not giving up and being prepared to sacrifice yourself for something that isn't selfish.

BRIGHTER THAN A THOUSAND SUNS
Based around a monsterously heavy, off kilter riff, this nine-minute colossus may be the heaviest track Maiden have ever recorded. And one of the best, too!
STEVEAdrian came up with the main riff, and it's a heavy one. It's powerful, with a lot of light and shade.. It sohuld be good live. They should all be good live.

THE PILGRIM
A Punchy mid-tempo album with an almost Egyptian feel to some riffs. Contains at least two jaw-dropping lead guitar breaks.
DAVE It's got a strange Arabian feel to it and also a kind of medievil vibe. In a way it takes us back to the Powerslave era. Janick does a superb solo halfway through. It was a really spontaneous performance.

The Longest Day
Effectively equal to Paschendale, this is another intense war epic. Dickinson's macabre poetry will send shivers down your spine.
BRUCE:It's full of powerful imagery. We're all in our late 40s and we grew up during the Cold War, in the shadow of the bomb. Then in the 80s we all went potty and had a party,but now the world is a dark place again. We're just reflecting that.

out of the shadows
Redolent of acoustic-tinged classics such as Remember Tomorrow and Children of the Damned, this is a sublime chunk of shape-shifting prog-metal.
ADRIAN: This is my favourite track on the album. It's laid back and proggy with a big chorus and lots of atmosphere. Sometimes it's hard to recreate our live sound in the studio but I think we got it right this time

TROBB
It might seem like and odd choice for a first single, but this sprawling feast of of unsettling atmospheres and massive Zed Leppelin-esque riffs is a real grower.
STEVE: The intro should make you feel uneasy, which is good. Any emotions you get from listening to music are good,This is a really different sounding song for Maiden. Who is Benjamin Breeg? Ha ha I'm not telling you!

for the greater good of god
Great Track. The longest track on the album is also one of the most powerful. Nine and a half minutes of pinpoint twists and turns, poignant lyrics and lashings of that timeless Maiden gallop.
STEVE: I'm not pro or anti religion, but I think that religion is in everyones life every day, whether they like it or not. A lot of terrible things have been caused by different peoples ideas of how life should be. This song is just asking why.

Lord of light
An elegant, edgy intro leads into a bruising onslaught of thunderous riffs, cunning tempo changes and an unforgettable soaring chorus. Dickinson sings his arse off.
STEVE: it's got a lot of aggression and melody. It's got a really fast bit that reminds me of "Only the Good Die Young". Classic Maiden ending too!

& the legacy
The proggiest track on the album begins with a sinister, folk-influenced intro before erupting into a storm of elaborate drama and bombast.
BRUCE: There's a lot of atmospheric bits and quiet intros on this album. The beginning of this song is relly creepy. "A strange yellow gas has played with our minds...". It reminds me of the film "Jacob's Ladder". It's really eerie stuff.

Kerrang then go on to say: "'A Matter of Life and Death' is out in early September through EMi Hopefully it stays August.

^Kovasti tykkäävät kehua uusinta tuotostaan, mikä on tietenkin ihan ymmärrettävää. Toivottavasti levy on myös yhtä hyvä kuin lupaavat.

Ainakin Breeg on mun mielestä ihan sitä itseään, nimittäin perinteistä Maideniä.

Pelkään kyllä erittäin paljon että nyt on semmoset hehkutukset alla että pettymys tulee, Breeg ei todellakaan lupaa mitään kovin hyvää...ellei kyseessä ole levyn heikoin biisi. Odotellaan kauhun sekaisin tuntein mitä tuleman pitää

Eilen käydessäni Keltasessa Jäänsärkijässä, näin kanssa tiskintakana hyllyssä ton promosinkun ja tietty olun heti sitä ostamassa mutta eivät myyneet. Sanoivat että "ei oo myynnissä, se on vaan ymph... koriste". Joopa joo sanon vaan. Ois pitäny enemmän tivata että miks se sitten on hyllyssä, täähän perkele levyKAUPPA! Noh, kuiteski siellä oli kanssa. Mutta että joku pyytää siitä 100!? Hiukka liikaa. Kohta noita irtoo huutonetissä parilla kympillä, joka tässä vaiheessa on ehkä pikkasen liikaa sekin. Tai eiköhän jokaine keräilijä arvota noi kohteet ihan ite. Toinen voi maksaa tostakin vaikka sen satasen ja toinen ei ostas ees kympillä. Ilmestyis nyt vaan se levy! Ei meinaa pysyä hoisuissa , vaikka uusia levyä on hyllyssä niin ettei meinaa ehtiä kuuntelee ja vielä ilmestyy muutamia ennen Maideniä. Mutta silti. Täpinät alkaa olee aika hillittömät!

Different worlds:
In the beginning this song appears like a typical single, with a catchy chorus in the vein of Tatooed Millionaire. Then instrumental part with typical maidenish guitar work. Is the shortest song of the album but it's more complicated and intricated than The Wicker Man and Wildest Dreams.

These colours don't run:
A short intro introduces a heavy riff, with a very good Bruce singing passionately until the chorus. In the second part the song loses a bit its identity among keyboards and a "oh oh oh" singalong part that I feel it has put been there forcely. (opinions of the journalist)

Brighter than a thousand suns:
Another short intro before a very heavy guitar riff, a good bridge but I feel the chorus is a bit unsure. Then guitar work, a beautiful solo, the tempo speeds up and then chorus again and final break closing with the beginning part of the song.

The Pilgrim:
The beginning reminds of 23.58 but then the melodies change to a oriental sound. Quite an anonym song, luckily the only one that I haven't found interesting on this album.

The longest day:
Hypnotic bass intro with a Dickinson singing in a gloomy way then the song speeds up and goes up with a really beautiful epic chorus. After the second chorus there are various guitar passages and then the song ends again in dark atmosphere.

Out of the shadows
Song really similar to an electric ballad, with Bruce in evidence with powerful voice and emotion. The only slow song of the album

The reincarnation of benjamin breeg:
The opening part has keyboards and bass, then guitar kicks in and you may think of Deep Purple. In the second part there are very heavy guitar passages.

For the greater good of God:
"Sign of the cross" style song, which goes growing and building up until a chorus full of backing vocals. Also in this song after the second chorus, guitar work with riffs and solos and closing part of the song like the beginning of the song.

Lord of Light:
A calm beginning then the song gets power. Really heavy riffs before the solo and final chorus.

The legacy:
The most particular song:beginning with acoustic guitar and voice, with Bruce like a story teller at King's court. After a couple of minutes of acoustic guitars, symphonic keyboards precede an epic bridge. The singing reminds of prog stlye singing with keyboards always presents before the final speed up.
