AC/DC to release a live album
AC/DC frontman Brian Johnson has let slip that the legendary rockers are likely to release another live album. Johnson was on The Chris Evans Breakfast Show on BBC2 in the UK late last week and casually mentioned that the band will “probably bring a live album out”.

They’ll have a lot of material to choose from after touring their Black Ice album for almost two years to over five million people. Word is that it will not merely be a CD but a DVD of one of their shows in Beunos Aires in Argentina in December last year.

It has been less than a year since they released Backtracks, a triple-CD, double-DVD box set of rare tracks and compiled live versions. They haven’t released a straight-up live album since the two included in the Bonfire box set of 1997.

AC/DC oli ensimmäisiä kunnon musiikkia edustavia artisteja, joita aloin kuunnella. Isäni on suuri AC/DC-fani ja käynyt keikallakin. Nykyään en enää AC/DC:tä enää juurikaan kuuntele, mutta hyvä artisti silti kyseessä.

Ilmeisesti olin äänestänyt Bonia, mutta molemmat käyvät. Niin eri tyyppiset laulajat, että vertaaminen on mahdotonta.

Kovimmat levyt ovat Powerage, For Those About to Rock (We Salute You) ja Ballbreaker.

Kovimmat biisit ovat Bonin ajalta Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap, Let There Be Rock ja Down Payment Blues. Brianin ajalta For Those About to Rock (We Salute You), This Means War ja The Furor.

Siinä vähän uutista suoraan hevosen suusta kun bändi oli Phil Ruddia lukuunottamatta läsnä Lontoossa uuden dvd:n ennakkonäytöksessä. Uusi levy ja kiertue on siis tulossa, saas nähdä vaan että milloin.

^ Ettei olisi tullut Ruddille kenkää huumetuomion takia. Bändi ei taatusti Amerikan rahakkaita areenoita jätä väliin, vaikka rumpali ei viisumia saisikaan. Uudesta albumista en enää edes uskaltanut haaveilla. Black Ice -kiertueen pituus antoi vahvasti sen vaikutelman, että bändi jättää hyvästit.

Toronto Sunin haastattelussa Anguksen totetaa levyn teon olevan vasta aluillaan, joten kyllähän sitä saa vielä odottaa.

Komeaa katseltavaa on tuo uusi DVD. Ei tuo musiikkillisesti hirveästi eroa esim. Stiff Upper Lip -DVD:stä, mutta yleisö on kyllä aivan hullu, erittäin hienoa katseltavaa tuo argentiinalaisten eläytyminen.

Ainoa miinus siitä, että ääniraitaa on kyllä melko selvästi retusoitu jälkikäteen. Ainakin taustalaulut on laitettu pitkälti uusiksi. En mene mitään vannomaan, mutta hieman haiskahti, että jopa liidilauluun ja Angusin kitarasooloihin on paikoitellen myös kajottu.

Nyt täytyy esittää ylistystä eräälle albumille, joka ei sitä tunnu tarpeeksi saavan.

Nimittäin Ballbreaker. Minulle kyseessä on For Thosen jälkeen AC/DC:n paras levy. Kappalemateriaalissa ainoa täytekappale on Whiskey On the Rocks, ja jostain syystä Hard as a Rock ei ole minulle koskaan kummemmin napannut.

Se kritiikistä. Nimittäin levyllä on niin monta helmeä, suurimpana The Furor, jossa synkkyys, uhkaavuus ja kauneus yhdistyvät majesteettisella tavalla. Kertosäe... Siis se niin hieno, että en keksi sanoja. Toiseksi paras on Hail Caesar, joka menee lähestulkoon metallin puolelle. Nerokas biisi, livenä varmasti toimiva noiden "Hail"-huutojen ansiosta.

Boogie Man on myös yksi lemppareitani. Kunnon bluesjyrä, jonka Brian Johnson tulkitsee upeasti.

The Honey Rollissa on mahtava pääriffi ja AC/DC:ksi mielenkiintoinen rakenne. Muut nappivedot levyllä ovat Burnin' Alive, joka jää mieleen erikoisen, haikean tunnelman ansiosta, Cover You in Oil, jossa on hieno pre-chorus, ja Ballbreaker, joka on varmaa AC/DC-laatua. Cover You in Oilin sanat... Jopa AC/DC:n tasolla hmmm... jännät.

Kaiken kaikkiaan kuuntelemisen arvoinen teos.

Toiseksi paras on Hail Caesar, joka menee lähestulkoon metallin puolelle. Nerokas biisi, livenä varmasti toimiva noiden "Hail"-huutojen ansiosta.

Onhan se, No Bull -liveltä löytyy.

Jokseenkin samaa mieltä täytyy olla, Ballbreaker on oikein hyvä levy, Brianin ajan parhaimmistoa. Itse kyllä pidän Back In Blackia ja Flick Of The Switchia ehkä parempina.

Tämä lähde väittää kuulleensa Malcolm Youngin pojalta, että isäukko vääntää uusia biisejä ja "mini" kiertue seuraa.
Nämä Abruzzon italiaanot näkivät Black Icen 168:sta keikasta 85, joten kaipa näillä on selkärankaa väitteelleen.

The only movie powered by AC/DC. This legendary concert film, covering a 1979 Paris concert during the Australian heavy metal band's "Highway To Hell" tour showcases the power and precision that the quintet bring to vicious rockers like "Whole Lotta Rosie" and "Let There Be Rock." Pixie-ish lead guitarist Angus Young, attired in his trademark school-boy's uniform, takes center stage with his energetic antics and frenetic solos, while the rest of the band crank out their minimalist boogie with quiet determination. Interview segments and humorous backstage footage show another side to the thuggish musicians, especially AC/DC's flamboyant lead singer Bon Scott, who died two months after this filmed concert.

Alla haastattelua kaverista joka väittää olleensa LTBR-projektissa mukana työskennellessään Warnerilla. Totta tai ei, mutta vaikuttaa ihan järkevältä. Tämähän on Warnerin julkaisu ja AC/DC on Sonylla eli LTBR ei saa minkäänlaista promootiota eikä näköjään tukea myöskään bändiltä. Itse ostin normidvd:n kun tuli Anttilassa kympillä vastaan.

I worked on "Let There Be Rock" for almost 15 years, while I was working at Warners. The film was embroiled in tons of legal problems, I'm relieved that it is finally coming out. It took 12 years to wrestle the 16mm Original Negative out of the vaults in France, the film's producer filed bankruptcy and because of French laws, the rights went back to him. Even though the film was shot on 16mm, with only concert lighting, I think it looks fantastic. The audio sources were very limited and most of them were in mono. The original Stereo mix cut the frequencies in half, the highs went on the left, and the lows went on the right. The studio wanted a 5.1 mix, which I refused to do because of the limited quality of the elements, they also wanted a 16x9, which I also refused, because it was shot in 4x3, on 16mm. I didn't want to lose any of the image. I also left all of the grain in, the studio went in later and did some digital noise reduction on the video.

Now that just sounds SCREWED UP. He files for BANKRUPTCY, but he retains the RIGHTS?

Yes, the studio ended up paying him twice for the negative, but that is how the French bankruptcy laws work. Unfortunately he didn't have any audio elements. The 2.0 mix that I made is pretty narrow. A good (famous) friend helped me mix the few elements we had.

For those who saw it in theaters, do you remember if it was cropped to a widescreen ratio or shown at its native 4:3?

The 35mm elements that made the Theatrical Prints were Matted CRIs and looked terrible, I waited until we could get the 16mm Original Reveral, before mastering it. The original theatrical stereo mix also had serious phasing issues, which I feel we greating improved upon. AC/DC were at a peak on this tour, I felt it was only right to make this presentation the best possible.

Were there EVER any multi-tracks for this to begin with?

I'm not sure about multi-tracks. I held off getting the original negative for a couple years, hoping that the producer would eventually present the multi-tracks. However once it became apparent that he didn't know where they were, and that the live Bonfire CD was basically mono, we went ahead and got the Original Negative. I suspect that the audio source was a mono feed from the soundboard. There is a mountain of legal documents, but very little information regarding the production.

Apparently, after I was fired, Warners went in and made a new 5.1 mix from the 2.0 that I put together. I wasn't comfortable going beyond 2.0, since all of the audio elements were originally in mono. We were able to fix the phasing problems in the 2.0. and did a little stereo enhancement, but I tried not to get too tricky with it.

AC/DC didn't want Warners to even release this DVD, and they refused any cooperation, so the extras are a little weak.

However, we did manage to get the original negative out of France and the new video master looks amazing. The 2.0 soundtrack is pretty good, especially considering the sources, I'm a little dumbfounded why a 5.1 was even made.

Myself, I'm planning on picking up the SD DVD, with the 2.0 track at Target for $12. This isn't a film I personally need to see on Blu Ray.

Its a nice remaster of classic rock film, with a great band at its peak. Considering the legal circumstances, I think it came out pretty good.

Erittäin asiallinen boxi. Oikein numeroitukin... 34 940/90 000. vähän iso painos numeroinnille, mutta itse arvostan tota. Nyt tiedän tasan tarkkaan kuinka limited se oikein on. Tosin onko toi siis BD-boxien limitti vai sekä DVD että BD -boxien... Who knows, I don´t. Suosittelen kuitenkin, odottelen jo innolla seuraavaa yövuoroa, jotta pääsee tuon kiekon pyöräyttämään.

AC/DC on taas alkanut toimimaan ihan uudella tavalla parin vuoden tauon jälkeen. Ei nyt mistään aivan suurimmasta suosikista omalla kohdalla puhuta mutta hyviä biisejä bändiltä löytyy todella paljon. Bonin aikaiset levyt ja Back In Black toimivat tietenkin parhaiten mutta myöhemmästä tuotannostakin löytyy ihan kelpo tavaraa kuten The Razor's Edge ja Ballbreaker.

Vaikka bändin kuuntelu jäikin pitkäksi aikaa niin silti suuri osa aikaisemmin kuulluista kappaleista oli hyvin muistissa mikä kertoo hyvin siitä miten tarttuvaa materiaalia ja loistavia riffejä AC/DC parhaimmillaan tarjoaa.

Hyvä pätkähän tuo on. Vaikka Brian Johnson hyvä laulaja onkin ja mies paikallaan AC/DC:ssä, niin tuossa on minun makuun se paras kokoonpano bändiltä. Oli se vaan karismaattinen kaveri se Bon Scott. Tosin ne haastattelut olisi voinut heivata bonukseksi, turhaan häiritsee keikan katsomista. Ei luulisi olevan vaikeata siirtää niitä pois.
